April 2011 – Light Creates Shadow

I just returned from a ten day painting workshop in San Miguel de Allende (Mexico) with the well known and talented Toronto painter, Barry Coombs.
For those of you who may not know, San Miguel de Allende is a 3.5 hour bus trip north of Mexico City; at a latitude of 20 degrees [within the tropic of Cancer]; at an altitude of 6500 feet.As such, the sunshine is particularly intense, which dramatically affects the way buildings, streets, vehicles and the urban landscape generally, look. The reason for this is that the constant brilliant sunshine creates deep and dark shadows.

However, since a picture is worth a thousand words [!], attached are a few of the pictures I painted which visually explain this dramatic effect.

Winter 2010 – 2011

In October two of my (Bill’s) pictures were chosen by Douglas Stocks to be part of the 9th Annual Cambridge Centre for the Arts Juried Exhibition.

During the fall, and continuing through the winter, I am participating in a series of acrylic workshops with the accomplished Laurie Wonfor-Nolan and have concluded a watercolour workshop with the renouned Gordon MacKenzie.

As a result of these experiences I have paintings that are dramatically larger than you have come to expect! You really do have to come visit our Gallery and see for yourself. Remember, just email or telephone us or watch your inbox for the weekend dates we are open.

In March 2011, I will join Barry Coombs in a painting trip to San Miguel de Allende and in April, 2011, will spend two weeks painting with a group of like-minded adventurers in Limoux, France.

We will keep you posted.
